Percival John Hillbrick - Gold Theft - 1909
VICTORIA. STOLEN GOLD.
Percival John Hillbrick, a miner, appeared before the city bench at Bendigo on Monday charged with being in possession of gold for which he had failed to satisfy Sergeant McKenna that he had honestly acquired. Mr. O'Halloran, on behalf of accused, who pleaded guilty, stated that his client had been made the tool of another party. He had a wife and young family to support. Hitherto he had borne an excellent character for honesty and industry, and since his arrest had proved himself thoroughly repentant. The bench, sentenced him to six weeks' imprisonment, and made an order for the payment of £6 11s. costs.

Found lying with a bullet wound in his left temple on the kitchen floor of his home in Walker-street, South Fremantle, about 4.30 p.m. yesterday, Percival John Hilibrick (70), was dead when medically examined. When the doctor arrived Hilibrick was already dead. The deceased's daughter-in-law, Isabel Hlllbrlck, who had been about the house during the afternoon, had not heard a shot fired.

Mr. Rust, Master of the Old Men's Home, referred to the excellent work Mr. Hillbrick had done in visiting the Home and Wooroloo Sanatorium and distributing comforts to the inmates, who desired him, as a mark of appreciation, to present Percy with a handsome polished jarrah walking stick, the handiwork of the old men. GOLD STEALING
ARREST AT BENDIGO.
Percival John Hillbrick, aged 32, a miner, residing in Nettle-street, New Chum, has been arrested on a charge of having been found in possession of gold
for which he had failed to satisfactorily explain to the police. A second charge of having stolen the gold from the Goldfields Consolidated mines was preferred against him. Accused, who is a married man, took an active part in the movement some months back, when all the employees at the mine took a pledge to the effect that they would loyally stand by the company and use all their efforts to prevent gold stealing. He was steward at the mine for the Miners' Association. Hillbrick was seen by Sergeant McKennan and Constable Baysher to enter the coffee palace with another man, named Robert Mason, assayer of Castlemain, who had engaged a room at the hotel under the name of Knox. When the police followed them into the coffee palace they were searched, and on Mason was found the sum of £85 in sovereigns and in Hillbrick's possession was found about 1½ oz. of retorted gold, which he informed the sergeant he had picked up at various times in the streets, mostly about New Chum. Under the bed in Mason's room was found a pair of gold scales, but he denied any knowledge of them. After Hillbrick had been locked up, his house was searched, and the sergeant discovered a dolly and fryingpan which had evidently recently been used for treating gold. An additional charge of being in possession of implements for treating gold which had not been registered was entered against Hillbrick. Mason was allowed to go, but, acting under instructions from Superintendent Sainsbury, Sergeant McKenna retained the £85 until he has consulted
the Attorney-General in regard to the matter.

Raymond Herbert Hillbrick (1954) Stawell Gift Contenders Leave
Two West Australian professional runners, Tom Panizza (right) and Kevin Lewis (second from right) left Perth by train yesterday for Victoria, where they will compete in the Stawell Gift meeting at Easter. They were farewelled at the central station by Mr. H. Winning (left), the secretary of the W.A. Athletic League, and Mr. R. Hillbrick, the league's official handicapper. Panizza plans to have his first run in Victoria in the Dandenong Gift on Saturday. He will then go to Stawell where he will run in the famous Stawell Gift over 130 yards and in the 220 yards event. Panizza, who is off the 7 3/4 mark should have a great chance of reaching the final of the Gift. Lewis, a distance runner, will contest the 880 yards and the mile events at Stawell.
