    Shipping Intelligence.

The clipper ship Gresham, which anchored at the Heads on Monday afternoon, from London, via Plymouth arrived in the bay yesterday afternoon, She brings about 380 Government immigrants, who have come into port in excellent health, under the medical supervision of Dr. J. S. Ireland, who has had long and successful experience in bringing out emigrants to these colonies. The Gresham Is a fine roomy ship for the purpose for which she was chartered by the emigration commissioners at home, and she has been fitted up with due attention to the requirements of so large a number of passengers.
The classification of these is as follows:- twenty eight married couples, 183 single women, 73 single men, and 60 children. Three Infants died and two were born on the voyage.
Captain Boniface states relative to the passage that the Gresham left Plymouth at three p m. on March 27, and had moderate variable winds to the line, which was crossed on April 22, in lon, 27 deg, W. Light and scant winds were met with in the S.E. trades, and the passage to the Cape of Good Hope, the meridian of which was crossed on May 22, in lat 38 deg. 13min. S., was particularly tedious, From the Cape to long. 86 deg. E. strong westerly winds prevailed, and afterwards easterly and N.E. winds, which continued for eleven days, the ship's position then being in 30 deg S. and long. 189 deg. E. From this point until the day before entering Port Phillip Heads, S.E. to N.E winds predominated.

On the night of May 20 Thomas Chittenden, a seaman, fell from aloft, and was drowned ; and although the ship was then going at ten-knot speed, she was rounded to, and every exertion made to save the poor fellow, who, however, was never seen again.

The Gresham, after landing her passengers, will discharge cargo at the Victorian railway pier. Her agents In port are Messrs. Fenwick Brothers.

    Notes
    • Research seems to show two more siblings. A Helen Mary Neame and a James Neame.
James is thought to be born in 1854. There are no New Zealand birth records for a James in 1854.
Helen is though to have been born at the same time (1852) as Jessie Sarah Neame or maybe the year after.
I have not found any records for a Helen Neame in marriage or death. So far electoral rolls have no shown a Helen Neame.
There is no given names on the birth record for 1852, the year that Jessie Sarah Neame used throughout her life.
In the absence of historic records for Helen, I would tend to believe that Helen didn't exist or Helen was Jessie Sarah Neame.

This timeline might be a clue to her life growing up:
1854: Jessie Sarah Neame was only 15 months old when her mother died.
1855: John Edward Neame (Jessie Sarah's father) married Rebecca Lyne. Jessie was now 2 and half years.
1867: Jessie now had 6 half brothers and sisters. She was now 14 years and 4 months.
1867: Jessie Sarah's step mother was committed to an asylum and he father (John Edward Neame) left for the Gold Field on the West Coast.
1869: Jessie Sarah Neame arrived in Melbourne Australia at the age of 16 years and 6 months. Arriving from Plymouth and it seems was traveling alone.
1871: Jessie Sarah Neame married Gustav Wilhelm Hillbrich. she was 18 and a half years.

It is assumed that some stage Jessie Sarah left New Zealand and went to England. It could have been to visit relatives. It could have been just to get away from a her life in New Zealand. It is odd that Jessie Sarah Neame went to Melbourne Australia instead of returning to New Zealand.

  • Notes
    • While no records seem to exist. There is on https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Neame-72 some information about other siblings for Jessie Sarah Neame. It seems that there may have been a sister Helen and a brother James.
Helen is thought to have the birth year. There is only one birth record and there is speculation that they may have been twins or just the same person. The birth record does not show any given names.
James is thought to be born around 1854.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Neame-73 indicates that the knowledge of his birth is anecdotal.
At this stage it is the assumption that Jessie Sarah Neame was born 11 Dec 1852. Further documentation from her marriage and death does support the birth date an location.
