| 13 | Wallaroo Drowning Case WALLAROO. Thursday. James Stiles (20), who has been staying at Dawson's Coffee Palace, Wallaroo,, for about 12 months, was drowned at Prico's jetty this afternoon. Mr. P. Ross, who was on the jetty seme distance away crabbing, heard a splash and sow Stiles struggling in he water. He endeavored to assist him with a pole, as he was unab1 to swim. As his efforts were unavailing, he informed the police, and Constables Waye and Gethings hurried to the ictty and recovered the body about 20 feet from the jetty. Artificial respiration was tried pending the arrival of Dr. Harbison, who declared life extinct. The mother of the youth, who lives at Winslow-street. | 16 | Although he is named on this memorial stone, Sussex Parish registers (familysearch.org) note him as being buried in St Andrews Churchyard, Tarring, Worthing on 20th April 1895. Sarah was his second wife. They married in 1861. His first wife was Emma Neame whom he married in 1848 Mertens was a London-born solicitor, who, in 1841 was appointed by the Lord Chancellor to be a Master Extraordinary in the High Court of Chancery. in 1851 he was in practice in Cecil Square with his brother-in-law, William Brooke. He was something of a visionary and saw significant development opportunities in the Margate area which he was able to exploit through his,and his brother's, connections. His brother, George, was a director of the new railway company that had been set up to build the proposed London, Chatham and Dover Railway. Mertens and Brooke were aware of when family farms came up for sale, often on the death of a family member. By the time the new railway reached Margate in the late summer of 1863, Mertens was the owner of all the land that would, one day, become the CT8 postcode area. The development of Westgate-on-Sea shows meticulous planning. The editor of Keble's Gazette wrote on September 23, 1871: "There are evident signs that Westgate is destined to become, in every way, in very few years, a watering-place of considerable size. "We see indications that the estate is managed by a master mind." To acquire the land that he needed had required the borrowing of a substantial sum. Mertens did not intend to develop the land himself and, while waiting to find the ideal man to do so, he began to sell or lease small parcels of land at the eastern end of Marsh Bay (later re-named St Mildred's) to individuals. By 1871 it seems he had retired from practicing law and described himself as deriving income from landownership. | 22 | Biography: John Edward was born in 1849.[1] He emigrated to NZ as a newborn with his parents aboard the 'Pekin'. He married (1st) Matilda Jane Lodge in 1870. After she passed away in 1887[4], he married (2nd) Maria Stewart (a widow) in 1893. He passed away in 1906 age 58 and is buried in Oamaka Cemetery, Blenheim. Mr John Edward Neame, who died at his residence yesterday, was a very old resident of Marlborough. He was born at Maidstone in Kent, and came out to New Zealand in the year 1846, being then a child of about three years of age. For a number of years he resided in Nelson where he married.Matilda Lodge, his first wife. Later he came to Marlborough and had the distinction of being the oldest and best known waggoner upon the road. For 27 years he followed this occupation, and for the last 17 years had driven a team for Mr J. White, of Onamalutu. His excellent qualities won him many friends and he was generally respected throughout the district. On Saturday last he was engaged in his ordinary occupation and after a brief illness died on Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock. His second wife, whom he married about 1892, survives and he also leaves to mourn his loss three daughters and two sons: Mrs W. Fairhall, of Spring Creek, Mrs G. Bonnington, of Wairau Valley; Mrs A. Tovey, of Blenheim, Mr S. Neame, of Tua Marina, and Mr Newton Neame, of this town. Note: The error in his published obituary regarding age and date of migration.
