 | Fire in Neame's Chemist (1880) DUNEDIN. Sept 16.
A fire occurred at Caversham last night, and totally destroyed a ten-roomed house which was occupied by Neame, chemist, McIntosh, dealer, and two other families. The fire started in Neame's shop, from which nothing was saved. A good deal was saved from Mclntosh's. Neame is insured for £250 in the National, and Mclntosh in the… |

Notes |
- Research seems to show two more siblings. A Helen Mary Neame and a James Neame.
James is thought to be born in 1854. There are no New Zealand birth records for a James in 1854.
Helen is though to have been born at the same time (1852) as Jessie Sarah Neame or maybe the year after.
I have not found any records for a Helen Neame in marriage or death. So far electoral rolls have no shown a Helen Neame.
There is no given names on the birth record for 1852, the year that Jessie Sarah Neame used throughout her life.
In the absence of historic records for Helen, I would tend to believe that Helen didn't exist or Helen was Jessie Sarah Neame.
This timeline might be a clue to her life growing up:
1854: Jessie Sarah Neame was only 15 months old when her mother died.
1855: John Edward Neame (Jessie Sarah's father) married Rebecca Lyne. Jessie was now 2 and half years.
1867: Jessie now had 6 half brothers and sisters. She was now 14 years and 4 months.
1867: Jessie Sarah's step mother was committed to an asylum and he father (John Edward Neame) left for the Gold Field on the West Coast.
1869: Jessie Sarah Neame arrived in Melbourne Australia at the age of 16 years and 6 months. Arriving from Plymouth and it seems was traveling alone.
1871: Jessie Sarah Neame married Gustav Wilhelm Hillbrich. she was 18 and a half years.
It is assumed that some stage Jessie Sarah left New Zealand and went to England. It could have been to visit relatives. It could have been just to get away from a her life in New Zealand. It is odd that Jessie Sarah Neame went to Melbourne Australia instead of returning to New Zealand.

- John married Sarah Pavey on 8 August 1849 at Deptford. The following day John, Sarah and their 10-day old son set sail for New Zealand aboard the 'Pekin'. The 'Pekin' arrived at Wellington on 26 December before going on to Nelson on 31 December 1849. They are thought to have had two or three more children after settling in the Nelson region.
He was at one time the Headmaster of the Collingwood School in 1859-61. He was later a chemist in Dunedin. Sometimes known as "Doc Neame", he seems to have had some medical training before emigrating, but no evidence that he actually qualified as a doctor.
He lived in Dunedin until his death on 5 May 1901, aged 74, and is buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin with his 3rd wife Mary in the Greig family plot.

- Sailed for NZ from Deal Kent, for Wellington, 9 Aug. 1849 at 9.00 p.m. on the 'Pekin'. Landed safely in Jan 1850 (Passenger Resgister) all well and in good spirit. May have trained as a doctor in the U.K., but did not complete his training.
Was the Headmaster of Collingwood School in 1859.
There is a photo of the school and the headmaster's house, and mention of his name on page 20 of a book ;"Collingwood To The Heaphy Track" by Carol Dawber , Published by River Press, Picton, New Zealand, 2000.
He was married to Harriet Rebecca Lyne at this time. The date fits with the births of three of their children in Collingwood (Emma 1860, Frederick 1862, Joseph 1864)
Died of paralysis and pneumonia at the Benevolent, Caversham, Dunedin, NZ
