Notes |
- Research seems to show two more siblings. A Helen Mary Neame and a James Neame.
James is thought to be born in 1854. There are no New Zealand birth records for a James in 1854.
Helen is though to have been born at the same time (1852) as Jessie Sarah Neame or maybe the year after.
I have not found any records for a Helen Neame in marriage or death. So far electoral rolls have no shown a Helen Neame.
There is no given names on the birth record for 1852, the year that Jessie Sarah Neame used throughout her life.
In the absence of historic records for Helen, I would tend to believe that Helen didn't exist or Helen was Jessie Sarah Neame.
This timeline might be a clue to her life growing up:
1854: Jessie Sarah Neame was only 15 months old when her mother died.
1855: John Edward Neame (Jessie Sarah's father) married Rebecca Lyne. Jessie was now 2 and half years.
1867: Jessie now had 6 half brothers and sisters. She was now 14 years and 4 months.
1867: Jessie Sarah's step mother was committed to an asylum and he father (John Edward Neame) left for the Gold Field on the West Coast.
1869: Jessie Sarah Neame arrived in Melbourne Australia at the age of 16 years and 6 months. Arriving from Plymouth and it seems was traveling alone.
1871: Jessie Sarah Neame married Gustav Wilhelm Hillbrich. she was 18 and a half years.
It is assumed that some stage Jessie Sarah left New Zealand and went to England. It could have been to visit relatives. It could have been just to get away from a her life in New Zealand. It is odd that Jessie Sarah Neame went to Melbourne Australia instead of returning to New Zealand.

- Biography:
John Edward was born in 1849.[1] He emigrated to NZ as a newborn with his parents aboard the 'Pekin'.
He married (1st) Matilda Jane Lodge in 1870.
After she passed away in 1887[4], he married (2nd) Maria Stewart (a widow) in 1893.
He passed away in 1906 age 58 and is buried in Oamaka Cemetery, Blenheim.
Mr John Edward Neame, who died at his residence yesterday, was a very old resident of Marlborough. He was born at Maidstone in Kent, and came out to New Zealand in the year 1846, being then a child of about three years of age. For a number of years he resided in Nelson where he married.Matilda Lodge, his first wife. Later he came to Marlborough and had the distinction of being the oldest and best known waggoner upon the road. For 27 years he followed this occupation, and for the last 17 years had driven a team for Mr J. White, of Onamalutu. His excellent qualities won him many friends and he was generally respected throughout the district. On Saturday last he was engaged in his ordinary occupation and after a brief illness died on Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock. His second wife, whom he married about 1892, survives and he also leaves to mourn his loss three daughters and two sons: Mrs W. Fairhall, of Spring Creek, Mrs G. Bonnington, of Wairau Valley; Mrs A. Tovey, of Blenheim, Mr S. Neame, of Tua Marina, and Mr Newton Neame, of this town.
Note: The error in his published obituary regarding age and date of migration. His name appears on the passenger list of the Pekin 1849, age 10 days
